	Hello hello,

Does anyone know if HP offers an internals class for there hp-ux
operationg system. They offer a class in programming with system calls, but
I was sort of hoping for a real internals class. Specifically for there
9000 series 300 machines, if not the 800 series will due.

If this class could be offered on the east coast that would be
great, and easier to talk my boss into it. I know of at least 3-4 people
willing to take it, if it's offered somewhat locally.

	Thanks,
	greg

Well, I'm not sure that it's an official offering, but our local office,
Rockville, Md, put one together for us. It was taught here at PRC and we
had a bunch of students. I'm not sure that you can them to teach just one
or two students since it was a special. The class was called "HP-UX Theory
of Operation" and it was taught by Brenda Suarez-Merril (sp?) and Andy
Suchoski (Our SE). This class is taught to SE's but Rockville offered to
teach it locally to some large customers. We got a nifty book with the
course. We asked that our course be skewed to the 800 series and it was.

There is also a deeper course called "HP-UX Internals" taught to SE's.
The Rockville office doesn't offer this, but they told us that if we paid
enough to cover prep time, it could be arranged. We declined.

We have a pile of source code licenses including one for HP-UX itself. This
was one of the prerequisites. This prerequisite is why this course won't
be generally offered. Even if HP waived the HP-UX source license requirement,
there is still the murky issue of the AT&T UNIX license.

I got quite a bit of email from that comment. Apparently some of you
have tried to obtain an HP-UX source code license but without much
luck. Rather than answer the email individually, I thought that I'd
just post. Here's what I know about the license.

First you must have an AT&T source license. After that you can
obtain a source license for a major release of HP-UX such as 3.0,
7.0, etc. There is no way to obtain the source for a minor release
such as 3.1. Each release costs $25,000. I do not know if there is
any kind of special deal for educational institutions. At present
we have the source code for 3.0 but our management is balking at the
thought of another $25,000 for 7.0.

The product contains code for the stuff that comes with HP-UX. The
kernel, drivers, libraries, and commands are all there. The
compilers are missing, HP won't release the source code to these under
any condition. (At least that's what they told us.) The source code
for other products such as Netlink, ARPA/Berkeley, NFS, X, are also
not present. I assume that they are available separately, but we
have never tried to obtain them.

Some of you wanted to know who to contact. We obtained the source
code through our saleman. I assume that you should contact yours.
