[comp.sys.hp] SLIP for hpux available

milburn@me10.lbl.gov (John Milburn) (09/26/90)

The SLIP (Serial Line IP) code which has been previously mentioned in
this news group is available for anonymous ftp and anonymous uucp from
me10.lbl.gov (128.3.128.110). It can be found in the directory
"/hp-ux" (for ftp people) or "/usr/spool/ftp/hp-ux" (for uucp folks).
There are two files, ppl_s300.Z and ppl_s800.Z. Choose the one which
is appropriate for your architecture. Please keep in mind that this
code is unsupported by HP, and by me.

HP has requested that I not make this code publically available. It has
been removed from the world readable area on me10.

It hasn't been explained to me yet. The person who requested that
I remove it is one of the folks who was instrumental in making
it available, so I didn't complain too much. A further explaination
has been promised.

Ok, if you would like to mail it to me I promise not to tell anyone. :-)

We run HPs almost exclusively in our dept. and SLIP would be nice to
have. What's the problem with distributing it?

   care to comment WHY?

Well, for one thing, if it contains licensed code, then HP needs to
make sure that it only goes to licensees.

Go ahead and call your field office while we are figuring it out. It
*is* available, but not through FTP right now.

HP has requested that I not make this code publically available. It has
been removed from the world readable area on me10.

my, my, a suspicious mind.. my understanding is that it includes
copyrighted code (to AT&T or someone) and cannot be made available
to those without appropriate legalese stuff, a point not immediately
realised by the parties involved but swiftly corrected once known

I certainly would.... ;)

Please note: I SPEAK FOR MYSELF, NOBODY ELSE, AND CERTAINLY NOT HEWLETT
     PACKARD.

I was the one who asked John Milburn not to re-distribute the HP-UX
7.0 patches for SLIP, as well as the SLIP software. Thank you, John, for
your cooperation. I did this because this software is unsupported in
Release 7.0, and because it involves some changes to libraries used in
building the kernel. These libraries contain a driver as well as other
modules not directly related to SLIP. The original intention behind
providing an earlier-than-planned "pre-release" of SLIP was to meet a
need. The people involved in this decision asked that the local HP
customer support people be kept "in the loop." This translates into
asking that customers get these patches thru their support engineer.
The latter is thus aware of who has the patches; should a problem
develop on the patched system (and we certainly hope it doesn't, but
we're trying to be cautious here), this information may be helpful in
more readily identifying the problem. It will also be helpful in
distributing any updates, should this become necessary (again, none are
anticipated, but we're trying to be cautious). Further, the support
engineer can assure that any dependencies among the libraries and
patches are met. This is to maintain a high quality of support to the
customer.

There never was any intention to restrict access to this software,
other than, of course, to HP-UX licensees only, and in a sensible manner.
The software IS available...

>>>>>>>>> THRU THE CUSTOMER'S LOCAL SUPPORT ENGINEER ONLY <<<<<<<<<<<<<
                                                     ^^^^
I deeply regret having been insufficiently clear how to get this
software. This has caused extra work and delays for numerous people,
and for that I apologize. I also regret having led anyone to believe
that there were any restrictions on this software other than in how one
gets hold of it, and (as should be obvious) to HP-UX Release 7.0 licensees
only.

Please bear in mind that this software is being made available on
an UNSUPPORTED BASIS FOR HP-UX RELEASE 7.0. Further, the machine
named in the earlier posting is not on the public network. Please:

o DO NOT bother its administrator

o DO NOT send requests to the administrator for tapes to be made,
	  etc.

All requests for the SLIP software and the patches to the kernel for 7.0
must be made thru your local support engineer.

Thank you for your patience.
