[comp.sys.hp] Automount on HP

lodin@plains.NoDak.edu (Steve Lodin) (10/15/90)

We are currently running a network with a bunch of Suns and a couple of
HPs. We will be increasing the number HPs in the near future and are
looking for ways to make life for the users easier. On the Suns we are
currently using a package known as the "automounter". This package allows
the operating system to nfs mount file systems on demand instead of the
usual method of having the systems permanently mounted. We use this
capability to allow a user to sign onto any machine and have his home
directory and any needed applications available to him as needed. The
paths to his files always appear the same no matter what machine he is on.
By distributing the automount database through yellow pages we only have
to enter the information for a user once and everything is transparent from
then on.

It was my understanding that Sun put the code for the automounter into
the public domain. Does anyone have it running on HPs? (Tony B.? jem?)
If so how well does it work? Are there other alternatives in use that
we might use?

I don't know whether sun have put automount into the PD but there is a free
alternative --- "amd" written by Jan-Simon Pendry <jsp@doc.imperial.ac.uk>.
This gives you all the capabilities of Sun's automounter and more.
Additional mount types, talks to hesiod as well as YP, runs on lots of
different systems.

We run it here on our HP's (300's and 800's running HPUX and MORE/bsd) and
our Suns.

amd 5.2 is available for anon ftp from usc.edu in pub/amd/... This version
was apparently included in the BSD 4.3-reno release. There is also a 5.3
version that is currently in alpha release.

cheers

I don't know a thing about Sun's automounter, but there is a PD version
called amd. It's available by anonymous ftp from usc.edu. We have it
installed here on Ultrix, BSD, and HPUX systems. It's a bit of work
to build the mount maps the first time but has been worth the effort.

Thanks for the response guys. I will give amd a try. VHE is a long shot
if amd fails.
