Is there a version of talk/talkd that will run on an HP 9000/815 running HP-UX 7.0? I tried the "berkley" version from uunet, but I keep running into problems getting it compiled. There are several unknown #defines (such as TIOCNOTTY), and I'm enough of a novice at this that I'm unfamiliar with what's missing and I can't come up with suitable replacements (assuming they exist at all). You should have the following entry in /etc/services: ntalk 518/udp talk It is not compatible with the older talk (which used port 517). If you are looking for a talk that can run uner unix sys V or BSD, You can ask here at th Padua University, hre we wrote a talk/talkd in C language tht run in our sun 3/260, HP9000/825, 9000/300 anda Olivetti lsx 3020 Is fast and affordable, and of course free. I receive several request of our talk that IS NOT ntalk/talk compatible, but can run on sys V or BSD machine, and support the local net. For who is interessed in, can take the two programs (talk.shar and talkd.shar) let's open ftp at the address 130.186.12.106 (sabrina@dei.unipd.it) give the anonymous login, and take thw two programs from the 'athena' dir. Here several host use this version of talk, and the best thing is that it never shut down! REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST NOT USE THE NAMESERVER good luck Renzo Marcanzin
