In the recent past, my group was using an HP workstation running HP-UX rev 7.0 that was borrowed from another group. When it had to be returned, we dumped the entire contents of the disk to tape using tar. We have now temporarily acquired another workstation that we wish to set up like the last one. The problem is, it is currently running HP-UX rev 6.5. Rumor has it that we can simply load the tape and overwrite the disk, and it will replace all of the old 6.5 files with 7.0 files, letting us reboot and run 7.0. Seems to me that this will cause several problems -- possible difference in file system requirements between 6.5 and 7.0, the 'sudden' changing of OS files in a running system, etc. Any advice or pointers? The second question is -- a couple of people went ahead and tried the above- described process. Somewhere in the middle of the load, a 'directory checksum' error appeared, which cause the load to be aborted. Could this have been cause by trying to load the new OS files, or do we have other (perhaps more serious) problems with the dump/load process. Thanks Peter Graham
