[comp.sys.hp] 3rd Party Vendor For Disk

khawand@hoss.unl.edu (Nancy Khawand) (10/12/90)

I am interested in locating the names of vendors that I could purchase
some third-party disks for our HP9000s850 that could be added onto our
HP hardware maintenance contract. Please respond to me directly at
khawand@hoss.unl.edu. Thanks.

To my (admittedly limitted) knowledge, HP won't put 3rd party disks on
an HP maintenance contract.

Speaking as somebody who's been wrong a lot, I can tell you that
HP has supported other vendor's discs (in this case, WORM drives)
under HP service contract. It is up to the local service District
Manager to decide if that is a good business decision -- i.e.,
we'll go and purchase a service contract from the 3rd party, and
act as an intermediary (Given that it is legal and ethical, the
only real question in solving a problem is "How much can you afford
   to spend?").

There is usually a stiff uplift for doing this, the accountants claim
it takes a lot of money to handle and administer "pass through"
charges. It will always be cheaper to go to the original vendor,
but having a single point of contact, one contract to administer
(it may cost your organization even more than it costs ours to
handle multiple service contracts), may appeal to certain customers.

At any rate, it might be possible, but the decision is made at the
local level. Contact your local HP CE (Customer Engineer) District
   manager.

If the object is saving money :-) you might want to look at a used
HP drive instead of a third party drive... there are a number of
HP re-market organizations which will guarantee that their
products will be accepted by HP on a support contract. (It is
my experience that you _might_ have to pay something to HP for
them to initially verify that the unit is operating properly...

One such organization is Eurodata in Ottawa (Canada). There are
others, but ask specifically if they will guarantee HP service
acceptibility. This is often a way of getting an HP product
(albeit probably not their latest model) at a non-HP price!
I have both bought and sold HP equipment through Eurodata and
have been generally quite satisfied.
