[comp.sys.hp] FTP on s800/HPUX 3.1

pk@unidoct.chemietechnik.uni-dortmund.de (Peter Koch) (10/26/90)

I want to install anonymous ftp on our HP9000/840 running HPUX3.1 .

I tried to find out how to log the incoming passwords for users 'ftp'
and/or 'anonymous', which usually should be <user>@<host>.

I did not manage that, but I found out, that creating /usr/adm/wtmp as a
regular file or better as a symbolic link to /etc/wtmp will enable ftp-logging
on per-user-basis (works fine on s300/HPUX6.5,too). In the first case You
can use 'who /usr/adm/wtmp' to see who was on Your machine using 'ftp', in the
second case simply use 'last'.

I have seen this on Sun-machines before and missed it here.
Maybe it is supported officialy "in the next major release" ?

Back to my problem: The above works for anonymous ftp, if usr/adm/wtmp
is created relatively to ~ftp, but it does not give the information I want.

So is there a way to get it, and, besides, are there any HPUX-specific
security objections I should know about ?

I attempted this and couldn't get it to work. I'm using an 825
and 7.0. Could you provide more info. This would be useful.

hans@inmic.se (Hans Berggren) (11/06/90)

A version of ftpd which logs connections as follows

Nov 6 16:05:58 eos ftpd[1204]: connection from had at Tue Nov 6 16:05:58 1990
Nov 6 16:06:06 eos ftpd[1204]: ANONYMOUS FTP LOGIN FROM had, hans@inmic.se

in syslog is available via anonymous ftp from eos.inmic.se (130.237.214.90).
Look in directory archive/hp-ux
We are using this ftpd and it works fine, both on series 300 and 800. The
HP-UX version we are running is 7.0 on both series, but this ftpd also
works on 3.1 and 6.5.
