What steps do I take to format a new disk and make it bootable?

Create appropriate device files (depends on: S300 or S800; HP-IB, SCSI,
or ...; etc.), attach the disk, and run newfs on it. newfs defaults to
making a bootable disk, unless the -n option is specified. See newfs(1m)
in the HP-UX Reference.

What version of the operating system, what system and what disk?

Refer to mediainit(1M) and newfs(1M). They should do the trick.

As one of my colleagues pointed out to me, I left out an important step.
You will need to run mediainit on the disk before running newfs. See
mediainit(1) in the HP-UX Reference. You can often find guidelines for
the appropriate interleave factor (-i option of mediainit) in /etc/disktab,
if the documentation with the disk doesn't give enough information.

Umm, if it's a new disk, you want to run mediainit on it before you newfs.

If you're not familiar w/ these commands, you'd be much better off using
sam (hp's sysadmin program) to add the drive. Sam's menu driven and relatively
monkey-proof. Fire it up and go to the "File Systems" section and then into
"Add a Hard Disk Drive."

Thanks to all of you who posted replies to my query. I got the disk
formatted and installed this evening without a hitch.
