[comp.sys.hp] HP Ruggedwrite 480: why multiple passes for raster graphic ?

eckert@medusa.informatik.uni-erlangen.de (Toerless Eckert) (12/05/90)

Hello

We have some HP Ruggedwriter 480, that we want to use to print raster
graphics. Now the problem is, that the printer prints much to slow.
It uses 3 passes over the paper to print a single line of 24 pixels
vertically. The printer has needles, but it uses only 8 per pass.

We assume that this has either to do with power consumption of
the printing head or the noise level. When we print raster graphics that have
very few black pixels, the printer often prints all 24 rows in a single
pass and therefore is as fast as in text mode.

Does anybody know the exact heuristic that this printer uses to
differentiate between these two modes ? We could then create our
graphics, so that the printer will use only one pass. We've already
tried to leave every other pixel white, but this ain't enough.
There is also no software command to change this behaviour, according
to the manual (there is no reference to this behaviour at all
in the manual).

Please reply by email.
