[comp.sys.hp] Centronics interface for a 300

lost@hp850.mbari.org (Steve Lowder) (01/11/91)

We would like to connect our Laserjet printers to an
HP 9000 series 300 via a Parallel interace (Centronics).
Does someone know who sells a board that will solve this?
We can accept DIO-I or DIO-II boards in this 300. Also,
can we connect a scanner via this interface?

                        thanks,
                        Steve

One solution to this problem is to use an HP-IB to
Centronics converted (on the order of $100). We obtained
such a product from Intelligent Interfaces
                    PO Box 1486
                    Stone Mountain GA 30086
                    (800) 842-0888
The product name was "MicroPort 45"

Another solution is to use the RS232 interface on the
laser printer. The beauty of the HPIB to Centronics
converted is that you don't need to use an interface
slot

There is a 3rd-party interface card available from I.E.M., of Fort Collins
CO. It does support 9190A/9195A ScanJet duplex I/O. It is fairly
inefficient, as it emulates a 98626A tty card at the backplane and does not
support DMA. There is a contributed scanner application available that
works with both the IEM card and the 375/400 parallel port.

For output only, HP now offers an HP-IB to centronics converter for a little
over $200, product numbers 92203J or 92203K, depending on AC adaptor
required. I have used this, and it is very satisfactory.

Should you upgrade your 300 to a 375 (via board swap on models 330, 350, 360
and 370), it has one full-duplex centronics port built in.

Steve,

There is not a 'supported' addon Centronics for the HP-9000/S-300 but
the current models (345, 375, and all S-400) have a Centronics I/F built
in. You may want to consider upgrading your S-300 to the 375 to get
Centronics along with higher performance. You may also go to the S-380
by putting in the 68040 upgrade. Please check with you local sales rep
for complete details. If you don't want to (or can't) upgrade, you
could consider an HP-IB to Centronics converter available from various
'black boxes' companies.
