[comp.sys.hp] installation woes

crouch@axion.bt.co.uk (the man whose head expanded) (01/10/91)

Hi,

I seem to be fighting a losing battle against hp0ux 7.0. I installed 7.0.3 on
a series 400 machine (an installation not an upgrade). I select install
everything. The installation succeeded, so, I logged on, editted /etc/rc to
set the system name. Rebooted. Now when the inetd tries to start it core dumps
with a bad system call, as do any subsequent network commands.

I have two questions:

1)	what's the fix

2)	what did I do wrong in the first place. Or is the installation procedure
the pile of sh*t I think it is?

Hi there -- sorry that you are having problems -- here are a few thoughts:

1) Did you check /tmp/update.log ? -- Did any errors occur when processing the
   following filesets:

   LANLINK LAN_BLD ARPA NS_SERV NFS_INCL NFS_RUN

Do you have them loaded on your system ? Did they show up when you selected
   all filesets ?

2) The fact that your networking commands core dumped with "bad system call"
says that the networking code failed to get genned into your kernel. Check
your dfile in /etc/conf -- does it have the same lan entries as say
   dfile.full.lan or dfile.maxservr ?

Hope this is helpful ...

You should use your dfile.full.lan to build yourself a new kernal,
to start with. Next check out /etc/rc, see what scripts it calls,
and make sure that you want them called and that they are there.
You may need to get them from /etc/newconfig if they do not exist.
Also, make sure that you have an Internet Id number if you are
connecting the machine to the net. I don't know where to get them,
but someone at HP might be able to tell you. That is as much as I
know. The installation tapes have all the required filesets at hand,
so the problems you will have now are in configuration.
