[comp.sys.hp] Internal HP addresses

ramani@CS.Stanford.EDU (Ramani Pichumani) (01/23/91)

I'm trying to establish an email connection with an HP employee who
has told me that his user name is "ajo'brien" and his machine name
is "hp6650/26". So I tried mailing to him using the following
address:

	ajo'brien%hp6650/26@hp.com

I got bounced mail from relay.hp.com saying that I have an invalid
machine name (in fact, hp6650/26 sounds more like a machine model
number to me). No one in his office seems to know how to send mail
to the outside world. Can someone from HP (or anyone else who has
accomplished this feat) tell me how to go about sending e-mail
from an internet address to an internal HP address? Please
reply to me directly since I am not receiving this newsgroup.

Thanks in advance,

The address your contact has given to you is an HPDESK address. HPDESK
is HP's internal mail system between MPE machines.
In order to access HPDESK from e-mail following address should be used:
a_j_o'brien%hp6650@hplabs.hp.com.

	Try the following:

	a_j_o'brien%26@hp6650.desk.hp.com

The underscores ('_') are important.

    Re: ajo'brien%hp6650/26@hp.com

Try a_j_o'brien@hp6650.desk.hp.com (you may need to quote the apostrophe,
depending on what kind of mailer you're using).

Try:

	aj_o'brien@hp6650.desk.hp.com

Make sure that your shell (or other command line interpreter) is not
eating or otherwise getting confused by the "'".
