traditionally (ie: since '87) on the 540 we have brought the system down for backups to do fsck on all the disks every week. now that we have an 822 and i am reorganizing the backups. i want to question this. ie: is it REALLY neccessary to fsck the disks every week before my incremental? thanks -- Lance R. I hardly ever run fsck. Usually fsck only runs when the system
crashes due to a power failure. I haven't run into any problem due to
this "habbit".

It is a good idea to run fsck before you do a dump. I have had the experience of a 835 file system (HP-UX 3.1 and 7.0) being hosed from normal (for us) operation (no crash/power failure/etc), and a dump of this file system being less than helpful when the file system eventually ate itself. But, I do play fast and loose when I feel lucky ;-> -- Steven S. Smith Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corp. steve@cfht.hawaii.edu
