[comp.sys.hp] Adding peripherals to hp 9000-350..

luism@genesis.Berkeley.EDU (Luis Miguel) (02/21/91)

I am already using the hp-ib outlet, as well as the serial port
for a modem in my 9000-350. I need to attach a printer and a terminal to
the system. WHat are my options?

Thanks,

/Luis

If you've got an extra slot in the 350, try the hp98642A rs232 mux card.
It gives you 1 25pin modem port and 3 4pin terminal ports (modular telephone
jacks). It's pretty handy; I run a 9600bps modem, laserjet, and 2 terms from
one. This is a short card, so your extra slot will have to be a DIO1 slot.
If your 350 has an expander box on top with solid (no ventilation holes) slot
covers, you're ok. Otherwise, you have long DIO2 slots, and will have to
convert the MUX card to use them. HP makes a kit for this, but I can't think
of the part #.

If your printer's got an hp-ib interface, you can chain it onto the end of
your hp-ib bus, but that doesn't help you with the modem.

You can add lots more HP-IB devices, which might help
with the printer, but you probably won't find an HPIB terminal.

Serial devices pretty much need their own port. The 98642A
4 port RS-232 Multiplexer is probably your best bet. It
has one port designed for modem use (although it can
be used for other devices) and three "regular" serial ports.

The HP-IB can support more than one device. An HP 92203J HP-IB/centronics
adaptor can connect parallel printers to HP-IB.

You can get a variety of serial cards for the 350, if you have a slot
available. If not, slot expanders are available.

Correct.

OR, you could order the 98638A 8-channel MUX, which is a "long card". All
eight channels are modem-compatible. It has an external pod which attaches
to the DIO2 card via a short cable.

Unless your HPIB has disks attached to it! You do not want to mix
printer/plotters on the same HPIB as your system disks.
