Thanks to all who responsed to my previous postings. The saga continues.. Well, given that my 9000-350 does not have any empty slots, I was adviced to install a backplane expander as my best option to get more serial ports. We happened to have an HP98568A 8-slot backplane expander here, so I checked the "Installing Peripherals" manual, and it does say this works for the 350. When trying to install it, though I find that the manual (and expander) assume that the computer has "short" DIO1 slots, whereas my 350 has long DIO2 slots. This makes it impossible to connect the expander to the computer, since the "connectors" supplied with the expander do not correspond to the ones used in the 350, and also because the connection is assumed to take place in the "middle" of the long slots, where nothing exists. Where do I go from here? Is there some kind of "adapter" I need to connect the "long slot" 350 to the backplane adapter? /Luis -- Luis Miguel. If all 4 full-width DIO-II slots in your 350 are full, as is likely the case, what you need is either: 98568A Option 132 or 98570A (with or without Option 004, depending on your needs) Both of these interconnect with the base SPU via the DIO-II bus. The standard (no Option) 98568A is intended for use with the Model 310, 320 or 330 DIO-I computers. It will work with DIO-II models, like the 350, if they have the top DIO-II slot converted to a DIO-I pair via a 98242B kit. This is not officially supported. In your case, your slots are probably all occupied by the larger DIO-II cards: CPU, RAM, Video, system interface. There is no kit to convert a standard 98568A to the Option 132 configuration. Depending on the vintage of the 98568A, the number of parts to be changed is significant. I've always seen the 98568 plugged into 320's and the 98570 used for 350's. the 78570 has 2 dio2 slots on bottom and 4 dio1's on top. It can plug right into the 350's dio2 bus. -- Paul B. The "HP-UX Installing Peripherals" manual, has on page 2-2 a box saying that the 98568a is supported for the 350. Nowhere in the manual (or the 98568a documentation) does it say that "option 132" is needed. Pretty frustrating !!!! |> In your case, your slots are probably all occupied by the larger DIO-II |> cards: CPU, RAM, Video, system interface. I am caught in a bind. In order to get more expansion I need to: - ditch 1 dio2 card, get the (unsupported) 98242b kit. or - get a completly new 98568a with option 132 --- $2500, plus I ditch the 98568a i have. or - getting a 98570a (another expansion box?) for $XXXX , and ditching the 98568a. No good solutoin, given that my advisor just had 2 of his 3 grants cancelled (courtesy of "Saddam vs Bush"). Any other alternatives? Is there a market for used//discarded equipment inside HP that I could tap into? Thanks a ton..... /Luis Luis Miguel. There are numerous HP equipment brokers who advertise in the back of "Workstation" and "HP Professional" magazines.
