I now have PCTCP's Interdrive NFS working with our HP835. The thing that "fixed" it was the exports file. I changed the directory in question to export to everyone just as a test i.e. no machine entry. The PC was then able to mount it! If I used the unqualified name of the PC, I was also able to mount! Using the fully qualified hostname of the PC however, returned the ever familiar: "ERROR: Mount access denied." (The real problem, then, appears to be somewhere in the exchange of hostnames/IP addresses between the HP and the PC. I don't know if the rpc.mountd is incorrectly looking up addresses or if my nameserver is not set up correctly. But nslookup on "machine" and "machine.subdomain" both returned the correct address. And "host machine" on the PC also returns the correct address. Any guesses?) The above is academic at this point: the software is now working. Thanks to everyone who replied, and especially people who explained (better than the manuals do) how the mapping between UID and GID takes place over NFS.
