I recently changed the OS in my 9000-350 from Mt Xinu's 4.3bsd to hpux. The reason being mostly support for peripheral devices, documentaton and robustness. I got hpux 7.0. One major thing I noticed is that hpux is noticeably slower (my guess is about 50%). I can live with that. The problems: I am getting various goodies (emacs, gcc, uuencode, x11r4, etc) from different sources, and I found that anything that I get in compressed format cannot be decompressed by the compress command in hpux. Both decompress and zcat produce infinitely large files from files compressed in suns or vaxes. The program just keeps writing away until killed or disk space is exhausted. Is there anything I can do? Since I use a 2400 baud line to get some goodies, compression is of the essence. Also, when I run X, my server is dying for no apparent reason, at randomly chosen intervals of idleness. Sometimes it lasts 12 hours, others only 2 hrs. Any ideas? Thanks, /Luis -- Luis Miguel. Well, I have never seen the problems you mention with the standard hp-ux compress. I have decompressed all of the utilities you mention. In any event, I have placed a gcc compiled version of compress 4.0 in ~ftp/pub on me10.lbl.gov. Just link it to zcat and uncompress. Also, running both the R3 and R4 X server from hp has been very stable for me, even with a vast assortment of clients. I have never had it crash with the frequency you describe. I have been known to leave the server running for months at a time. -jem -- John Milburn milburn@me10.lbl.gov (415) 486-6969 "Koko, will there be gnomes and dwarves for Lebee to wrestle with?"
