It seems impossible to get schematics or details of the backplane used in the old 9816 machines. Could somone suggest where I could find details of (functional description , timing, pin out) of the backplane of this machine. Where is the 68881 interface address?. Has the memory map been published anywhere ?. Has anyone heard of a publication called 'Bench Notes' in which a component level schematic apparently appeared ?. Can one 'peek and poke' bytes to specific locations in memory using rocky mountain basic ?. Is there a cross reference listing of hp part numbers vs real world part numbers published anywhere.?. Has anyone hacked hardware in this device ?. Comments, suggestions or general help welcome on all points!. Ian H.

Sounds like you need: HP 98630-90001: _HP 98630 Breadboard Interface Installation and Programming_ This includes a schematic for the breadboard card and other information of possible use. Also: HP 09800-90011: _Accessory Development Guide for HP 9000 Series 200/300 Computers_ This manual appears to be a fairly complete description of the DIO bus. I think this is the backplane description you want. One more item, which won't be needed with a 9816, but which I list for completeness sake: HP 98562-90010: _DIO II Accessory Development Guide for HP 9000 Models 330/350 Computers_ I don't know if these manuals are still available. | Where is the 68881 interface address?. There is no 68881 in a 9816. That came later. | Has the memory map been published anywhere ?. You'll find some of that in the manuals listed above. | Has anyone heard of a publication called 'Bench Notes' in which | a component level schematic apparently appeared ?. I think that's service notes for the HP repair people, but I haven't seen one since 9835/45 days. | Can one 'peek and poke' bytes to specific locations in memory using | rocky mountain basic ?. Yes. This was first documented in the 5.0/5.1 manuals, but has been in the language from the beginning. See READIO/WRITEIO in the _BASIC 5.0/5.1 Language Reference_ (HP 98613-90052).
