[comp.sys.hp] Hardware handshaking on the built-in serial port on a 400s?

sscott@fwhnm02.fwrdc.rtsg.mot.com (Steve Scott) (03/28/91)

I hope I get a definitive answer on this one (this time ;-)

I have set up uucp on an 400s (50 MHz '030 version) computer system
running HP-UX 7.03. I have connected a Telebit T2500 via the built in
serial port (select code = 9).

I have noticed that when using cu to the modem and asking for the register
set (for example), that at times characters are dropped. My immediate
solution was to turn on XON/XOFF handshaking. The problem is, this doesn't
work well with my uucp feed. The conversation freezes in mid-stream. So,
I need to do hardware handshaking. Oh yeah, I have the computer interface
set at 9600 baud and I have set up the TB to lock the RS232 interface to
9600 baud. I would LIKE to go at 19.2k baud.

Okay, the problem is: I have been told that hardware handshaking does not
work (or works not very well) on the built-in serial port. Is this true?
If so, what can I do about it? Is there a special driver or a specific
method of setting up the device special file (other than specifying a modem
connection) to resolve this problem? I have heard (through the grapevine ;-)
that release 7.05 will resolve this problem. Is THIS true?

I have not gotten a lot of empirical data on how many characters dropped,
number of retries required, etc. as I have just gotten uucp set up. But,
based on a day or two experience in interactive mode, it appears that I am
going to have problems.

Any ideas, suggestions, comments, RTFM's?

Thanks,

You need to turn on the 16 byte FIFO and maybe CTS/RTS flow control on port
9. Prior to release 7.05 (i.e., in 7.0 or 7.03) you need a patch. At 7.05,
the patch (shar) is still useful because of the documentation it provides.

Request a copy of the "Centronics/Serial" patch from your local HP support
rep. If they don't have it, have them contact me, as I am the supplier (it
is not on our normal field support patch system).
