Dear HP Gurus : What follows is an excerpt from /usr/spool/lp/log showing the problem we are having with our HP9000 model 825 accepting remote print jobs from a machine called "berto", which is a DOS box. Note that in this case, berto is also the username of the person involved. The DOS box is on our ethernet, and runs the Clarkson mods to NCSA telnet, one of which is lpr, which is used to send print jobs to the hp9000. This software works fine with our suns and rs6000's. The print server's name is sam. cicero is an HP9000 model 835 which prints off of sam. lpsched was started in verbose mode: lpsched -v the rlpdaemon was started by inetd: rlpdaemon -i -l What appears below is straight from /usr/spool/lp/log. Basically, it looks like lpsched expects a file of the form cfa[job num][remotehostipaddr]. However, if you were to look in the spooling area (/usr/spool/request/lp), you'd see that the control file is *actually* of the form cfa[jobnum][remotehostNAME]. This applies to all print requests from remote machines. In essence, my question is: why does lpsched expect to see an IP address in the control files from the PC but not in those from the other machines (a 2nd HP9000, 3 suns, an rs6000) which are in use?? Thanks for any help you can offer. I have been in touch with HP software support, but no answers have been found yet, and I'm anxious. lp-3611 shou1 lp Mar 28 11:05 CHILD: Mar 28 11:06 lp 3611 0000 FIFO: Mar 28 11:06 m lp -1 FIFO: Mar 28 11:16 n FIFO: Mar 28 11:16 r lp 1996 toki sam 0 lp-1996 toki lp Mar 28 11:16 FIFO: Mar 28 11:16 n CHILD: Mar 28 11:17 lp 1996 0000 FIFO: Mar 28 11:17 m lp -1 FIFO: Mar 28 11:18 n FIFO: Mar 28 11:30 r lp 918 berto 128.135.232.102 1 lp-918 berto lp Mar 28 11:30 lpsched: Unable to open and lock "request/lp/cfA918128.135.232.102" FIFO: Mar 28 11:30 r lp 1997 root sam 0 FIFO: Mar 28 11:30 m lp 0 lp-1997 root lp Mar 28 11:30 CHILD: Mar 28 11:31 lp 1997 0000 FIFO: Mar 28 11:31 r lp 1998 root sam 0 FIFO: Mar 28 11:31 m lp -1 lp-1998 root lp Mar 28 11:31 CHILD: Mar 28 11:31 lp 1998 0000 FIFO: Mar 28 11:31 m lp -1 FIFO: Mar 28 11:39 r lp 1999 rapc sam 0 lp-1999 rapc lp Mar 28 11:39 FIFO: Mar 28 11:40 r lp 2000 rapc sam 0 CHILD: Mar 28 11:41 lp 1999 0000 FIFO: Mar 28 11:41 m lp -1 lp-2000 rapc lp Mar 28 11:41 FIFO: Mar 28 11:45 r ti 2001 mack23 sam 0 ti-2001 mack23 ti Mar 28 11:45 CHILD: Mar 28 11:45 ti 2001 0000 I am mack23@sam.spc.uchicago.edu Thanks. Please include the contents of /usr/spool/lp/lpd.log. This is the log file for rlpdaemon. My guess is that the PC is sending requests refering to itself by its IP address. The lpd.log file should shed some light on the subject. Bob Lienhart
