My title isn't scorning those of you that have obviously listened to jazz before and therefore have heard some outstanding bass players. It was designed to draw in and ridicule those that claim the bass players of their favorite rock group are worthy of any special attention. How many of them WRITE music for bass, let alone play that music on an album? If any musician is to judged or compared, it must be in the context of the kind of music they play and their instrument. (All basses do not look like 4-stringed electric guitars). So lets qualify our admirations. Electric Bass: Me three for Jaco Pastorius for his sound and technique. He also has some very nice tunes on his albums. Acoustic Bass: My biggest complaint is that no mention (maybe I missed it) was made of * * * Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson * * * whom I consider to be the best Acoustic bass player. After having listened to many of his solos on albums (in particular 'Chops' with Joe Pass) with my jaw hanging down in amazement and my ears burning, I finally went to see him at Charlie's Georgetown in D.C. where he played with a bunch of other Nederlanders and Phillipe Catherine (sp?) from Belgium. That's when my eyes popped out in addition. Anyway, he's very good. And fast. And his compositions are sweet and challenging. Somehow, I didn't mind the $30 it cost for me and my date. - Fred PS. I vote for net.music.jazz
