[comp.sys.hp] compiler situation in 8.0

jim@tiamat.fsc.com ( IT Manager) (04/21/91)

The recent information surfacing about C compilers and HP-UX 8.0
has me deeply disturbed.

First of all, my HP support rep has already visited to inform us about
8.0, and made no mention of the fact that in order to keep operating
normally (i.e. compiling large, complicated programs) we would have to
but an additional product. I would think that at least 7.0 customers
who have been faithfully paying the software support fees (which in our
case includes money for upgrades) should get what they've been paying for.
Let's see if I can get this a little clearer:

1) We bought 7.0, which included a full function C compiler.
2) We've been paying support fees, which includes the right to get updates
for the products we already own (which included a full function C compiler).
3) It sounds like there's a real good chance that when we get the 8.0 update,
there will NOT be a full function C compiler in it.

If #3 is true, I would hope some other things will happen, too.

1) The cost for the update fees for the OS will go down, since the OS no
longer includes a significant portion of its functionality, and since the
compiler is a separate product, we'll have to pay separate fees for it.
2) In the future, HP will try to make sure people hear about things like
this though official channels, and not second hand.

Also, we are in the process of ordering an HP 832, which I assume will have
8.0 on it, and our sales rep never mentioned that the OS that comes with
the system does not include a "full function C compiler".

So, to get to my reall point, as someone else suggested, would someone from
HP please post an *OFFICIAL* statement concerning the status of the
full fucntion C compiler, including info on how people making new model 800
purchases, and people with exsiting 800's running 7.0 will be affected?

The annoucnement of the 700's has been a very good thing for HP, it would
be a pity for them to get the users upset over this C compiler issue.
