[comp.sys.hp] floppy drive for 9000/300?

tt@tarzan.jyu.fi (Tapani Tarvainen) (04/18/91)

Is it possible to connect a floppy drive that can read PC floppies
(either 3.5" or 5 1/4", high density or not) to a 9000/300 series
machine (340/345/370)? Or a 425? Or a 834?
Is such a product (hardware and software) available (from HP/3rd party)?
(My HP sales rep says there isn't, and recommended I buy a 720 ...)

Thanks in advance for any info.

You CAN read PC disks on a series 300 if you're running HPUX.
You need a 9153C or 9122C HPIB drive and either SoftPC (software PC emulator)
or the DOS Coprocessor (hardware PC card). The 9153C is 20/30/40 Meg HD with
3-1/2" floppy. The 9122C is single or double 3-1/2" drive floppy. Either can
access high density disks. The key software commands are dosls, doscp,
etc. which have syntax similar to lifls, lifcp, etc.
The DOS Coprocessor will only work on the 370, or a 400s setup for DIO cards.

You can use the 3-1/2-inch HP 9122C drive with all of the above. The 9122C
is a dual-floppy HP-IB drive and suuports all HP and IBM single-sided,
double-sided and high-density formats. The 'doscp' command suite for file
import/export is standard in HP-UX.

If you don't have SoftPC, formatting DOS floppies on HP-UX is a little
tricky, but can be done (I have an article).

The 9127A 5-1/4-inch drive was recently obsoleted, but only supported
360K media in any case.

The later 9122C floppy drives are high density, and can read and write
either DD or HD 3.5" disks. I don't know if HP has any 5.25" HD drives.

Bundled with HP-UX are DOS utilities (dosll, doscp, dosrm ... man -k dos
for more info). We use these on our 300 all the time.

We use the HP-UX DOS utilities all the time, and have neither SoftPC or
a DOS coprocessor.

I've breifly thought about how to do this. I've never tried it, but how
about this:

Ahead of time, get a freshly formatted DOS floppy and either dd
or cat the contents onto an HPUX file. This saves the file
	system data.

When you need a DOS formatted floppy, mediainit it with the
proper switches to create 512 byte sectors (mediainit -f2 -i2
for a 9122, I think). Then, dd or cat your previous "file
system" file back to the floppy.

This wouldn't spare any bad sectors, but I think it would work. I'd
love to get a copy of your article, if that's possible.

Thanks.

You can use PC SCSI drives as well on the 345 and
up systems with a SCSI port. The dos utilities
under hp-ux don't handle the latest dos 3.x disk
blocking scheme but there is a recent (last 6mos)
	utility (dosread?) in comp.sources (uunet.uu.net)
that will allow you to do this. We have even read
DOS formatted Magneto-Optical disks on our 345
with that software. (with little hacking)

These have been bundled in the past, but apparently aren't any more if
purchased new (at 7.0). IMHO I think they ought to still be bundled, but...

|	You CAN read PC disks on a series 300 if you're running HPUX.
Third party software is available for reading DOS floppies from RMB, also.

| You need a 9153C or 9122C HPIB drive and either SoftPC (software PC emulator)

SoftPC or DOS Coprocessor is only needed if you want to run PC software.

Which are standard in the base HP-UX system.

| The DOS Coprocessor will only work on the 370, or a 400s setup for DIO cards.
The DOS Coprocessor works on any 300 that has a DIO slot to plug it in, if you
have the appropriate supporting software. The company that makes PC Elevator
for Domain Systems has a version for EISA 400s. I think I saw that they're
supporting it with HP-UX also, but check with them.

Or if you want to format a DOS disk in your drive. Also you might round up
a 9127A drive on the surplus market (its obsolete) and you'll be able to
talk to low-density 5-1/4 disks also.

These have indeed been bundled (with HP-UX) in the past, and currently
(7.0) they are still bundled! They are in the fileset DOS_UTILS for both
300/400 and 600/800.

I think that there might have been a release where they were not
supplied with HP-UX, but that is a moot point now.

Can we end this urban legend now, please?

Oh yeah: This is another opinion which I think is a fact.
