[comp.sys.hp] 9000/7?0 GRX

I have a question about the GRX configuration of 7?0's (in my case, 730.)
The beast comes with 8 planes of display memory, but comes only in monochrome.
Is there only a luminance output? Does the driver board have a color-map on
it? I'd like to have color, but I don't want/can't afford the double buffered
stuff on the CRX.

There is only a luminance output on the GRX board. There is a color
map, but it maps each index to one intensity rather than a RGB triple.
If you look at a GRX board and a CRX board side by side you will see that
they are almost identical. They both have the same frame buffer memory,
eight planes double buffered. The big difference between grey scale and
color is the monitor. A grey scale monitor is much simpler than a three
gun color monitor.
