[comp.sys.hp] HP-82973-A vs. i486/25 conflicts ? any known ?

flinton@eagle.wesleyan.edu (04/26/91)

Cast of characters: one HP 82973A HP-IL Interface with default address 1700,
in one ALR 486/25 Model 40 "BusinessVEISA" under MSDOS 4.01,
driving one HP 9114B HP-IL 3.5" portable floppy drive box.

Problem: at full speed (25 MHz), the ALR announces Read or Device errors
when attempting to access the 9114. Sometimes it complains of INT 24 error.

At the ALR's slowest speed, the DIR D: command works, but TYPE and
COPY D:<filename> CON: both bomb out, either with error messages as before,
or by displaying patent nonsense. (D: is the drive letter assigned the 9114.)

Is there a known maximum processor speed beyond which the 82973 gives up?
Is there a revised HPIL.SYS for use with versions of DOS later than 2.0?
Should I choose a better address for the 82973 board, or modify its IRQ choice?
Are there other known gotcha's (or fixes) I should be aware of?

Mail replies must be best -- if interest warrants, I'll post a summary of
advice received. Many thanks. -- Fred

I have the a similar setup but instead of a 486 machine, I have a
286 machine at 20 Mhz and under MSDOS 4.01. I can recover from
the Read and Device Errors by retrying a sufficient number of
times. I have an additional problem. In my HP-IL loop I also
have a HP110 laptop. When I run HPLINK.BAT it will pretend to be
a floppy drive, effectively making its RAM and ROM Disk visible
for the HP-IL controller. HPIL.SYS will assign it drive letters
F: and G: (Drives A: to D: are already used and drive E: is the
9114B). When I then ask for a directory of F: or G:, the 286
machine will produce absolute rubbish or it will die altogether.

I have tried making the HP110 the HP-IL controller by running
HPLINK.BAT (really the CS program) on the 286 machine. Of course
I changed the external drives parameter to include the number of
drives of the 286 machine. Like that, the HP110 does not even see
the 286 machine.

I run with revision E of the HPIL.SYS and associated software
and it all worked very well under DOS 3.2 on a XT. I could even
run things like PCTOOLS and look at the RAMDISK of the laptop and
PCTOOLS didn't notice the difference.

I think that more than anything else, HPIL.SYS and the CS program
must be incompatible with MSDOS 4.01. Even if I get it to work
with the current software, I don't trust HPIL.SYS with large
media.

I have tried talking to HP in the UK and they are absolutely
hopeless. They don't even know that anything like this exists.
My question is, does anyone know whether HP has a patch to revi-
sion E or whether there is a new version of the software? And if
there is, where can I get it.

Any comments or hints from HP would appreciated.
