One of the best thing about HP is the documentation. It was normally possible to get even very technical documentation without knowing any secret code, and the documentation is normally of a very high quality. But lately I have had troubles finding the right documentation. The "documentation index" from August 1989 is outdated, and no successor seems to be on the way. I have been having problems finding material about the 400-series; I found a reference to a "Tech. Ref. Guide" (I havn't received it yet, so I'm not sure what level its on), but have been unable to get a "configuration guide". Likewise I only noticed the "HPUX Portability Guide" because somebody mentioned it in this newsgroup. Is there any easy way to find out about available HP-documentation? Since the quality normally is so high, one should expect HP to do some more advertisement. Regards Carl-Lykke PS: At least it only takes about a fortnight to get the manuals from HP. I ordered a "Programmers Ref. manual for vt420" (or something like that) from Digital. It will be delivered in 3 months!

I have a copy for 1990-1991. The part number is 5953-2460D, printed 8/90. Contact your local HP sales office to get a copy. +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Bruce Hauge MAILSTOP: 3U/L4 | | HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY EMAIL: bruceh@cv.hp.com | | IC Business Division PHONE: (503) 750-2675 | | 1020 NE Circle Blvd. FAX: (503) 750-2145 | | Corvallis, OR 97330 | +------------------------------------------------------------------------+

As far as I can tell, we've not had a "documentation index". We did have something once called a "documentation roadmap". It was a list of most of the HP-UX manuals, their part numbers, and a brief description of each manual. The equivalent today is the "Finding Information" manual (actually 2 different manuals depending on whether you want 300/400 or 600/800 info). The part numbers for 8.0 version of these manuals are: Finding Information (Series 300/400)..... B1862-90001 Finding Information (Series 600/800)..... B2437-90001 As of 8.0, information about our documentation is in two additional places online: * In the file "/usr/newconfig/8.0ReleaseNote". * A new "manuals" manpage that can be accessed via "man manuals" or in section 5 of the printed version of the "HP-UX Reference". > I have been having problems finding material about the 400-series; > I found a reference to a "Tech. Couldn't find any manuals in the list with titles close to what you've got above. > Likewise I only noticed the "HPUX Portability Guide" because somebody > mentioned it in this newsgroup. This is listed in the sources I mentioned above. The 8.0 part number is B1864-90006. > Is there any easy way to find out about available HP-documentation? > Since the quality normally is so high, one should expect HP to do > some more advertisement. We're working on it. To summarize, the following sources should help you find the manual(s) you're looking for in 8.0: * "Finding Information" manual * "Master Index" manual * "/usr/newconfig/8.0ReleaseNote" file * "manuals" manpage (also in section 5 of the "HP-UX Reference") If you have any other comments or suggestion about how we can improve our documentation, please let us know.
