[comp.sys.hp] faulty 7933 UNLOCK DOOR key

jason@hpcndjdz.CND.HP.COM (Jason Zions) (05/30/91)

I don't think the 7933 has a removeable disk pack; seems to me the primary
difference between the 7933 and the 7935 is the fact you can unload the pack
on the '35. I don't know why they put the Unlock Door button on a '33; seems
kinda silly to me.

Nothing at all - except the difference between the 7935 and the 7933 is that
the former has user-replacable disc packs. The same packs are used in the
7933, but they aren't user-replacable :-(
My sources tell me there WAS an upgrade option to turn a 7933 into a 7935
( :-) ?) but this cost about $4,000 ( :-( ) and may no longer be available.
If this is a viable option for you and you need to use replaceable packs,
I'd suggest you contact your local HP support office for more details.

The HP7933 disc drive does not have the feature of a removeable disk
pack. There is a way to open the door by removing the top housing from the back

We've got a donated 7933 washtub drive that we can't seem to open.
We connected power to it, switched to UNLOAD, and turned it on.
Once the display shows STOPPED, we should be able to press UNLOCK DOOR
and open the top. Nothing happens when we press UNLOCK DOOR. Is there
something we're doing wrong (besides following the 7935 manual :-)?

Thanks for your replies,

The 7933 is an early model of the 7935 that did not have the option
to remove the media. The "unlock door" button that is shown in the
7935 documentation should in fact be unlabled on the 7933.

If you *really* want to get that pack out, it is possible. Beware
that the 7933s are not supported with pack removal and that this is
not official advice from Hewlett Packard.

At the back of the unit, the top section has several ventilation slots.
One of thos slots will be slightly different from the rest (too lazy
to go into the computer room, write if you need more detail). Insert
something into that slot (not much force should be required, HP name
badges work rather well) and the back end should lift. Remove the top
and the door mechanism will be exposed at the front. Notice the labels
that tell you what to not do. Do that :-)

Like I said, you have to *really* want to change packs . . .
