[comp.sys.hp] tcp/ip ARPA for HP3000 ??

brennan@coco.cchs.su.oz.au (05/29/91)

	Hello people!

Okay, blow a fuse if I haven't posted to the right groups...

We are stuck with a HP3000 mini in our Library, that we now
want to get onto the net.
What alternatives do we have for getting ARPA services?

ANY clues, tips, laughs would be appreciated..

especially when I'm a person surrounded by Suns && Vaxes!!

	HP3000's.... ohmygod!!

There should be an Australian dealer. This is a HP recommended third party
product. Features Telnet, ftp, smtp

You should specify; is that a BIG HP3000 (9xx series) or a SMALL HP3000
("STACK" 16 bit architecture). (BIG refers to the word size, not physical
size, i.e. 32 bit as opposed to 16 bit).

If you have a big 3000 (i.e. something running MPE/XL), talk to HP.
They should have an ARPA services product real soon now, if it isn't
already out. Note: HP's ARPA services doesn't include telnet, but
does have FTP.

If it's a small 3000 (one running MPE/V), try contacting Wollongong.

You have to buy two packages unfortunately. One is something called
ARPA Services for MPE or something like that from HP which gives you
an Ethernet board and a TCP kernal. Then you have to purchase
third party software to give you the application programs (I kid
you not). Wollongong sells such a thing for the HP 3000.

Two observations:

it isn't cheap and the last time we did this we found that HP's TCP
has interoperability problems with Wollongong's TCP package
for the PC. It works well with most other TCP's, though.

Good luck.

I feel sorry for you. We are stuck with one of these beasties and it
has driven us practically to drink. The only solution when we started
was a combination of TWG's overprices TCP suite and a cisco router to
convert from 802.3 to ethernet II framing.

Since then the TWG software has been mostly fixed ( now supports subnets,
ethernet framing, and DNS resolver ), but is still expensive.

Try info@twg.com for pricing and the like. Good luck

Luke,
It depends...
If u have a "classic" HP3000 (CISC , runs MPE V...) then u need to talk to
a company called Wollongong ... (dont remember the rest of their name, and
dont have their address either.) Maybe someone else will post that info !

If u have a HP3000/9xx (RISC, runs MPE/XL...) then talk to your sales or
support contact person at HP. HP have the means to communicate with
tcp/ip boxes from other vendors. Product information here could be construed
as an ad from HP! If u want specifics, send me email, & I'm happy to oblige.

What model HP3000 do you have? The "classic" HP3000 series (with CISC
architecture) do not have a HP solution for ARPA/Berkeley services,
but Wollongong Group have one available. For the "New Generation" 3000s
(RISC machines) you can get FTP and Telnet from HP. I think FTP is
a software product, but Telnet is a hardware solution (a Telnet
TCP/IP-card added to a HP DTC terminal server or as a separate Telnet
Gateway).
Product number for the Telnet Access card is HP2347A (we have ordered
one).

Another solution is to hook up a TCP/IP terminal server to the
RS-ports on the 3000.

HP now provides Telnet on the DTC. This enables u to Telnet to the HP3000/9xx
if u go thru the DTC.

johnkg@hpindwa.cup.hp.com (John Gonsalves) (05/31/91)

ARPA Services (FTP and Telnet) are available on the HP3000/9XX. FTP was
made available on MPE XL release 2.2 (A more robust verion on release 3.0).
Telent is also available (if not already, soon then) and likely not
bundled with an OS version, but rather an independent product.

For MPE V (classic architecture), Wollongong (sp?) provides WIN/TCP.
