Since the hp-ux 8.0 update will apparently come much sooner for the 800 series than 300/400, I'd like to know if it will be possible to update the 800 series server in a mixed cluster to 8.0 while leaving the diskless cnodes running 7.05? Any problems that's likely to cause? I am told that 8.0 in a 835 with 27147A scsi card supports scsi disks. Is it true? What kind of partitioning scheme is used (is it still hardwired in the kernel)? Am I likely to succeed in connecting a 3rd party disk? Will it be possible to move a disk from a 370 to the 835 with contents intact and accessible, and vice versa? -- Tapani Tarvainen (tarvaine@jyu.fi, tarvainen@finjyu.bitnet)

In general, all systems in a cluster must be running the "same" release of HP-UX. "Same" has a somewhat squirrely definition, since things like 7.0, 7.03, 7.05, and 7.08 are all the same release. Basically, the Diskless protocol has a version number built into it; when the protocol changes, the release number is changed. You cannot run a server at 8.0 and clients at 7.05. SCSI will be supported on the 835 with 8.0 with the card you mention. Disk partitions are still, alas, hardwired. Since the Series 300 does not support disk partitioning at all, you cannot simply move the disk from 800 to 300 and have things remain accessible. -- This is not an official statement of The Hewlett-Packard Company. Not even with a disk with only section 2 (i.e., partitioned as one big chunk)? What I actually want to do is moving disks in the other direction: I have a couple of 600M scsi disks in a 370, and I want to move them to the 835. I was hoping that if I simply move the disks and tell the 835 to use section 2 it would work ... How about the 700s? I'm just about to buy a 720. Can I move the 370 disks to it? -- Tapani Tarvainen (tarvaine@jyu.fi, tarvainen@finjyu.bitnet)
