[comp.sys.hp] Cluster spread over two nets

sjl@doc.ic.ac.uk (Steve J Lacey) (06/03/91)

Hi,
I have an hp9000/700 as a server and 9 diskless clients. The
server has two ethernet cards one on net A and one on net B.
Now, the clients are all on net A.
I now wish to add another client, but on net B. This new
client was added using sam. It finds the server and downloads /hp-ux
but after reporting the link addresses of itself and the server,
repeatadly says `Server not responding...' and nothing else.

Observations: the entry in /etc/clusterconf for the server has
the address for the ethernet card on net A, but not net B.

Has anyone tried this before and if so, can it be fixed? Any
help will be gratefully received!

Steve.

HP-UX Diskless does not support diskless clients on multiple LANs.
All clients must be on the same LAN.

I'm afraid you will have to put the new client on "net A". Simply
move the client to "net A" and boot it, you will not need to change
any configuration files on the server.

We are aware that it would be nice to support diskless nodes on
multiple LANs, and that feature is currently being investigated.
However, it is somewhat complicated, (from a logistical standpoint,
not really a technical one) as the protocol currently does not allow
for it, so a "synchronous" release of HP-UX on both the Series 700
and Series 300 would be required.
