Greetings! As the current president of ADUS, I would like to get some input from HP-UX workstation users. First a little background. ADUS is a computer users group founded 10 years ago for Apollo workstation users that currently has some 6800 members worldwide that are essentially Domain/OS users. Membership is heavily weighted toward system administrators. ADUS membership is free. Following the HP purchase of Apollo we changed our bylaws to position ADUS as a users group for all HP workstation users. As you would expect (I think :-) ) ADUS has developed a strong relationship with what is now HP's Workstation Systems Division and used to be the Apollo Systems Division and we have also developed an on going relationship with Interex. ADUS publishes a quarterly newsletter, holds an annual conference, has a software library service, and an Internet node with several modems. The software is available free over the net or at cost by tape. The ADUS conference will be held concurrently with the Interex conference this year in SanDiego, starting Aug 4 at the hotel next to the conference center. The ADUS conference will focus on getting information from HP workstation engineers (both HW and SW) and planners and providing them with user input. The main hot topic will be HP's version of OSF and the users migration to OSF. HP has been telling us for two years that OSF is HP's strategic UNIX operating system and that both Domain/OS and HP-UX will fade away as HP workstation users migrate to HP-OSF. ADUS is positioning itself to be actively involved in this transition. We are in the process of joining OSF as a user group and have established OSF contacts within HP. HP has been working with ADUS to set up a proactive workstation Engineering Directions session at this conference. Anyone interested can get more information on ADUS or the conference from Carol Relph. Phone 508/256-6600 ex7646 or email relph_c@apollo.hp.com So much for the advertisement. I am soliciting comments from the readers of comp.sys.hp on the following: 1) What is the level of interest by HP-UX workstation users in joining ADUS and developing an HP-UX side to ADUS? Any volunteers? 2) What, if anything, do you feel ADUS could do to address your interests/needs as an HP workstation user/system administrator? Let me state that we are *not* interested in duplicating Interex services or in fighting with them for members. We do feel that we are better set up to deal with HP workstation issues. 3) Are their any demographics on the readers of comp.sys.hp? Does anyone have a feel (guess) for the number of HP-UX workstation users reading this news feed and what % that is of the total? 4) What is the level of interest in OSF? In general does the HP-UX workstation user community know that HP-UX will be replaced by OSF? Is this viewed as a big deal or just another %-} OS upgrade? 5) What type of presentation or activity would get the HP-UX workstation user interested in ADUS and the ADUS conference? 6) Would the presentations at the ADUS conference by OSF staff and HP staff on OSF (Motif, OSF/1, DCE, ANDEF, OSF plans, HP plans) be enough to get you to think about attending? 7) Have the 9000 4xx machines configured for HP-UX been shipping with information about ADUS? 8) Any general thoughts or comments? Thank you in advance. Douglas A. Eltoft ADUS is a not for profit ADUS President HP-workstation users group telephone: 319/335-5751 email: daeltoft@icaen.uiowa.edu
