[comp.sys.hp] Need to know about SLIP

gda@creare.UUCP (Gray Abbott) (06/21/91)

Can someone please fill me in on SLIP for HP-UX? I have a
pressing need and my HP sales connections say "we don't have
any SLIP, supported or unsupported". Yet, I've seen discussion
in this group about one.

What is it? How can I get it? How reliable/robust is it?
What are its drawbacks? I want to make occasional dialup
connections for "ftp" and also run remote X windows (expecting
it to be slow, even with a high-speed modem - we need to do remote
support for a system we wrote for someone). Can I do these with
this mythical SLIP?

Some SLIPs I've seen on other systems seem to be set up for a
hardwired serial connect, that's UP all of the time. I don't want
to pay the phone bill for that. I need it to dialup "on demand".

Others can be set up only as SLIP Servers, other only as Clients.
I need both for HP-UX.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

SLiP is available in the HP-UX 8.0 release. I believe it
is possible to obtain an unsupported SLiP for HP-UX 7.0.
You would need to contact a SE and have him contact the
right division.

I too would like SLIP. Is it available anywhere via anonymous ftp? In
particular, I'm looking for binaries for the HP9000 series 300 on HPUX 7.0.
Documentation and installation instructions will be needed as well.
