I have recently been having problems with my 1541 on several different disks. The problem is that when I write a file to a disk sometimes I generate a write error 24 and the disk stops. If at this point I do a directory I can see everything up to the point where the new file was being written in the directory. After that point I get a head banging session and another error. I have also seen this problem when deleting a improperly closed file (a star). My question is this, is this a problem of my 1541 getting overheated? Is there anyway to recover these disks (about 6 in my files now). I tried tracing the directory blocks with a disk evaluator program. I can find the blocks before the problem and after but the block with the problem is now all garbage. Is there anyway to patch over the bad block so that I can read the rest of the good directory blocks. I don't understand the check- summing required to change things in the directory block. And finally is there anyway to totally recover the lost directory block? Any help on this problem will be a great help. At this point I'm triple backing things up and I've still lost files. Thanks in advance Ken Goodnow
