By the way, how many of you have heard the Residents' EP, "The Beatles Play the Residents/The Residents Play the Beatles"? The "R's play the B's" side is a tortuous cover of "Flying". The other side is the absolutely incredible (by any standards) "Beyond the Valley of a Day in the Life". It is a Revolution 9-like journey through the music of the Beatles. Lennon's odd musical fragments and inverted tape loops from Revolution 9 are replaced here with tape loops and fragments straight from the music of the Beatles!!! The orchestral passages from "I Am the Walrus" played backwards. Layer upon layer of cascading and alternating "Ya-ya-ya"s. McCartney's best and most recognizable bass lines appear out of nowhere. The first two chords from "Tell Me Why" repeated almost endlessly. If you liked Revolution 9, and if you loved the Beatles, this will stick to your gums forever. [For those of you who think this sort of treatment of the Beatles is sacrilegious, please see "All You Need Is Cash", a movie about the rise of the Rutles, a legend that will last a lunchtime... "Their first album took forty minutes to record. The second one took even longer..."] Trivia question: how did the Residents get their name?

Answer to trivia question: The residents sent their first recording (later released as "Meet the Residents") to warner bros. with only a return address and no name. Needless to say, WB sent the recording back with regrets addressed to (you guessed it) resident Any other Residents fans out there?? -ptr- UUCP: ...harpo!utah-cs!pab ARPA: pab@utah-cs
