A long time ago, when I was a younger lad, I bought my c64, and soon after I aquired a 1541 disk drive. However, the heads used to go out of alignment monthly, and the second time I brought it in to be realigned the kind repairman, sensing my youthful ignorance, made a permanent modification which kept the heads from going out of alignment for ever more (and WOW! did that set screw he drove into the collar ever do the trick!). From what I had heard of the new 1541 (NOT 1541c) drives, they are constructed differently so that the heads won't go out of alignment. The same thing goes with the 1571 drive. And thus to my question: I recently read an add for a place that performs Mail Order Repairs on c64's, c128's, 1541', and 1571's. One of the repairs they listed was something like 'Permanent alignment fix for 1541 AND 1571.' Now wait a minute...I thought the 1571's were not supposed to need a permanent modification because they were constructed like the newer 1541's (not 1541c's) to insure that the heads would not become misaligned like the old 1541's. Furthermore, my brother has a 1571, and has never had any problems (but then again he isn't a real programmer; he just plays a lot of games). So what is the real story behind the new 1571's and 1541's? I am interested mainly because I am considering aquiring a c128 and 1571, but if the drive is going to go out of alignment, I would rather stick with my old permanently modified 1541 and c64. -- Chris Lishka /lishka@uwslh.uucp Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene <-lishka%uwslh.uucp@rsch.wisc.edu \{seismo, harvard,topaz,...}!uwvax!uwslh!lishka
