[comp.sys.cbm] I hate it when that happens...

When I first bought my 128, I didn't pay too much attention
to some problems I was having - an ITT Xtra PC monitor
making strange 'popping' noises, the notes in some 64 music
(I don't really have anything that makes extensive use of
music in 128 mode), being completely off, etc. Naturally,
90% of this stuff can usually be attributed to something
done wrong by the new user, so I didn't worry about it.

After using my machine for over a year, I now strongly
suspect (after posting queries to this group) my video chip
to be bad, and I'm afraid the sound chip may be frazzled as
well. I can and have lived without 80 columns, using my
old 1702 monitor, but the sound problem has got to go. I
rarely use my cbm equipment for more than gaming nowadays,
and the melodies and sound effects are not only off, but
VERY nerve-grating at points (the upper octaves of one
	voice seem particularly shot).

Once again, I'm looking for help, suggestions, and information
pertaining to this problem. What would constitute a good test
of the sound capabilities on my 128? Further, with the known
problem of the video chip needing replacement, would any of
you have a ball-park figure on the cost to repair the video,
and possibly the sound too? If it's over $100.00, I think
I'll just trade in my 128 for another C64. Any suggestions
opinions, and info will certainly be appreciated.
