I have received some email that leads me to believe some of you may have been mislead by a previous posting regarding the 1764 RAM expansion for C64s. Since my access to arpanet seems to be broken, best to post my response... My posting referred to adding additional RAM to a 1764 RAM expander board for a C64 (you cannot add more RAM memory directly to a C64 board). Please note that even with a 1764 expander, the C64 system (including BASIC) will not automatically use the additional RAM. A disk comes with the 1764, containing a RAMdisk program, some useful utilities, and some examples & demo programs. If you want to add more memory to the 1764 expander board, it's rather simple assuming you have the proper skills. There are two rows of DRAM on the 1764 board- one is populated and the other is not. All you've gotta do is stuff 8 more 41256 DRAMs into the empty row (I suggest you solder good quality 16-pin sockets into the empty slots & then put the DRAM into the sockets). Once that is done, look on the backside of the 1764 board for a jumper that sez '512K' and short it. You now have a 512K expander for your C64. There may be an earlier version of the 1764 out there that does not exactly fit this description- it has a huge DIP, and the jumpers mentioned are on the top side of the board. Check out the type of DRAM- if all the slots have been populated, it will be difficult to add memory to it. -- -- Fred Bowen uucp: {ihnp4|rutgers|caip}!cbmvax!fred arpa: beats me tele: 215 431-9100 Commodore Electronics, Ltd., 1200 Wilson Drive, West Chester, PA, 19380
