[comp.sys.cbm] Help! My C-64's dying!

doug@edge.UUCP (Doug Pardee) (09/23/87)

Aargh! My C-64 is trying to die yet again. The first symptom was sudden,
unexpected rebooting. But it didn't take me long to notice that the power
light went off and back on when the reboot occurred. Took a lot of waiting
around, but I've nailed the problem down to the power supply, 5 VDC section.

And it shore do look like it's triggered by overheating. So, I suspect it's
the 5V regulator IC. And my experience with thermal problems and epoxy-
encapsulated semiconductors has been that they only get worse, and rapidly.
The fan I've got blowing into the power supply is only a temporary fix.

Anyone know what that part is? Mine sez SK 3052P, but "that doesn't compute"
with the semiconductor cross-refs which say an SK3052 is a power transistor
in a TO-66 case. This guy's in a bizarre flat-pack (not a TO-220) which I
believe to be a TO-3P package, and is almost certainly a 5V regulator with
1-1/2 A current capability (that's a *lot*).

Or maybe I should just try to find a brand new C-64 power supply? Mine's
an '83 vintage and has worked fine 'til now.
