[comp.sys.cbm] 6480 modem woes

trudel@topaz.rutgers.edu (Jonathan D.) (09/21/87)

A friend of mine recently bought one of these suckers, and is
having problems with it. He can't log into Compuserv at 1200
baud with any regularity. I've sat down with him and have been able
to log into my system, so I know it is working at 1200 baud.
The terminal program isn't all that wonderful (I believe thatit's the
one that came with the modem - Com Term or some such), and doesn't do
much besides set parameters and initiate dialing.

What I'd like to know is what are the commands for the modem - Are they
simple? Is it possible to use a program like kermit or term.plus and
have him type the modem commands himself, or is he trapped into using
the supplied program (which does zero terminal emulation)?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a bug in the C-64's baud rate table; 1200 doesn't work right.
If your comm program allows it you can use the user-defined baud rate (it
works, no matter what the programmer's manual says) or you can fix the
table by (1) copying the OS (and BASIC) to RAM, correcting the table,
and switching out the OS rom, or (2) burning a new eprom with the
table fixed (oh, you don't have an eprom burner? 'Salright, I don't
either). _Mapping the 64_ by Compute! Books contains a discussion
of the problem, the location of the table, and the correct values.

Ok, I had heard about this, and I believe it to be true (I've actually
seen it in action), and promptly forgot it. I'll see if I can find
the solution.

Aside from that, does anyone have the modem commands??????

Please????
