[comp.sys.cbm] Help wanted for vt100-128

Is anybody out there using the "vt100-128" terminal emulator that comes with
the CBM modem/1200?

"Common Sense" and "vt52-64" also come with the modem/1200, but I didn't
use them because I wanted to work in the 80 column mode. I have been using
the "vt100-128" to communicate with the Vaxen here, but I have not been able
to use "vi", apparently "vt100-128" does not completely emulates the vt100. Has
anyone run into the same problem? I have tried to write a termcap for the
"vt100-128", but I was unsuccessful. Is there a working termcap for the
"vt100-128" out there? If there is, would someone email a copy to me?
Is there a public domain terminal emulator that will work in the C128 80 column
mode with "vi"? Could someone send a copy to me? I am getting very tired of
"ed". I am desperate! Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Tsun Wong

I am, and I'm having problems, too. But I can help with some of yours.

Common Sense doesn't support 80 columns. I guess that discredits the title.
For vt52-64, try typing CTRL-8. CTRL-4 switches back to 40 columns.

I assume you explicitly inform the VAX that you have a vt100, rather
than using either qterm or VMS's SET TERM/INQUIRE. But if you do, VT100-128
won't respond correctly to the inquiry. At least my copy doesn't....

I am sure Dr Evil Labs would be glad to help you to a PD copy of
kermit-65 for the C-64.

Finally, you might have a bad copy of VT100-128. The copy that came with
my 1670 was also buggy, and I even posted here about it a year ago. I
am using a friend's copy that he got from his 1670, but that too has some
bugs. Doesn't ANYBODY have a bug-free version of VT100-128? Is it
legal for us to exchange copies of this software that we're supposed
to have anyway?

Asyou found out the vt 100 term with the modem doesnt support cursor
addressing... there is a prgm out in the semi public domain
on most major online systems.. I know for a fact its on Genie ...

called micro vt 128 which supports the addressing needed here.. I am using i
I use it just for coming here as the xmodem transfer and the stability of
the buffer are suspect

Well, I thought I would toss in the information that vt52-64 has an
80-column mode. Unfortunately, this is no help to your vt100-128 woes,
but then, I don't have my 128 in yet, and therefore haven't had the
opportunity to help you there.

most of the vt 100 128 terms that came with the modems were buggy
for whatever reason mine was also....
I am told also that the prgrm with the modem doesnt not support
the addressable cursor needed here....

Micro Vt 128 supports the cursor but the xmodem transfer is hosed
and also the prgrm lock up sometimes when printing data from the buffer

but remember this si commodore machinery you're supposed to expect
all of these problems (grin)

I experienced the same frustration you are now going through
about two years ago. At the time I talked to Jeff Porter at
CBM (the engineer responsible for the 1670 modem), he was
sympathetic, but in the end was no help. I found a program
called microVT, which is written by the same person that wrote
vt100-128, works slightly better -- it is public domain. In the
end I switched to using MEX in the CP/M mode. MEX is also
public domain -- both programs are available on QuantumLink.

MEX requires a slightly modified adm31 termcap/terminfo file.
I have been using MEX for about twenty months, it is slow in
handling backspacing and sometimes messes up the screen, but
other than that it works well.

If you would like a copy of my termcap or terminfo file for
MEX, please let me know. Also, if you find a terminfo/termcap
file that works with vt100-128 I would appreciate you sending
me a copy.

I assume that your problem is that "vi" assumes that it's an 80 column
terminal, and thus prints characters into the 80th column, which on a VT100
means the cursor stays on column 80, but on VT100-128 by default wraps
around to the next line. You have two choices: Use Commodore-\ (English Pound
symbol) to disable the linewrap, or else make your own termcap that says you
have a 79 column terminal (in which case "vi" won't do such nasty things).
Makes me homesick for Emacs, which doesn't make stupid assumptions about the
position of the cursor after printing to the 80th column, like "vi" does.

I do have a termcap for the VT100-128 program that enables both
delete-character and insert-character functions (with minor modifications in
VT100-128's translation tables, documented therein). Alas, it's currently in
Lafayette, Louisiana, and this is Dallas, and USL's network connections are
out of order until further notice due to phone line prblems....
