The 1541 *will* absolutely handle CP/M disks in 128 mode, as long as they are formatted in single sided 1541 format (the ones that come form Commodore all are)! The 1541 will also work with 128 mode; it cannot handle "fast serial" or "burst" disk communication protocols, and the 128 will not send it any as soon as it realizes it is talking to a 1541.
