[comp.sys.cbm] 1541 alignment

kev@voder.UUCP (Kevin Hoskins) (01/09/87)

My 1541 has trouble with some of the GEOS software, namely
Font Pack 1 (will NOT open ("open" like on a MAC') the disk) and
The Writer's Workshop (will not go to any other "page" of the
directory). I have CSM's "1541 Disk Drive Alignment Program"
software. Running this program tells me that the drive
cannot read track 35. But using the disk editor option on my Fast Load
cartridge I can read track 35 just fine. Also using the "display t&s"
and "performance test" programs on the "test/demo" disk that comes
with the 1541 shows no trouble with track 35. I did have some trouble
loading the programs, though. Cannot make sense out of that last one.

I seem to remember someone on the net mentioning that they knew of
a way to align 1541s with a 'scope and/or a DVM. Can that person or anyone
else get back to me concerning this procedure.

Can anyone tell me anything about the FSD-1 1541 compatible disk drive?
I do know that it is manufactured in Japan by the same people that sourced
the 1541 to Commodore. If anyone has used on, I would sure like to hear
from you. Does it stay aligned? Does it have that awful head-banging?

Fred Bowen are you out there? I have tried about 15 times to call
you over the phone but either the phone just kept ringing or I got cut
off or the receptionist would loose me or.... And when I try to send
mail to you , it keeps coming back....

I have some questions about the SX-64, adding an extra drive to it, and
the drive used in the 1541. I may as well ask the questions here, I am sure
that there are others that may be interested.

First, is the SX-64 still available? I ask this because 1) GEOS
has a driver for the LaserWriter, allowing one to print geoWrite
documents on the LW using an RS-232 adapter, 2) I have access to
the LW at work, 3) It would be most convenient to have the
portable 64 to bring to work and make use of the LW. If it is not still
produced do you know how or where I can get one? There must be some lying
around somewhere.

Assuming that I do acquire one, what is invovled in adding a second
drive to it?

Concerning the drive used in the 1541. Can it be replaced? I want to
get away from the the type of door closure that it uses and use one with
the lever type closing mechanism. And can a drive be used that does not have
the cam and stop, the thing that causes all that noise when formatting
and seems to send the drive out of alignment?

Back to the topic of the SX-64. This could be easily replaced by
a 3.5 inch drive. Just make a 3.5 inch drive that is able to format and
store data so that a Macintosh can read it. This would allow the
LaserWriter to be used by '64 owners.

I have heard rumors of 64k, 256k, and 512k ram packs for the '64.
Is any of this true? And if so when will thay be avialable and for
how much?

Well that's it for now. I am sure that I will have more questions
latter.

Thanks Fred and thanks to all that reply.

Fred, if you want, you could try calling me at 408-721-3866
