[comp.sys.cbm] a good vt100 emulator for the C128

prindle@NADC.ARPA (Frank Prindle) (04/28/88)

The search for a really good VT100 emulator for the C128 need go no further
than the latest version (2.1) of C64 Kermit. VT100 is but one of several
emulators contained in this package, and it is outstandingly faithful to
a real VT100. The package contains a screen driver for the C128 80-column
screen (though the program runs in C64 mode, and will do a software 80-column
screen if you only have a C64). Very, *very*, few features of the VT100 are
not faithfully emulated (e.g. 132 column mode, double size characters,
some of the more obscure terminal reports). Full keypad support is provided
(though lack of enough keys forces PF-1 thru PF-4 to require a CTRL key
depression along with the F keys), so using EDT/EVE and all those funny
DEC software products that live or die by that blasted keypad is no problem.
The VT100 emulation passes the classic "vt100test" program with flying colors
(except for the few non-supported features). Scroll/No-scroll, xon/xoff flow
control, 1200 baud, full ascii and graphics character sets, all screen
attributes, etc. are fully supported (2400 baud will simply have to wait for a
version that runs in C128 native mode at 2Mhz). All colors may be customized.
Add to this the support for Kermit file transfers in both directions and you
have one really nice telecom package. The only problem right now is in-
compatibility with one Commodore modem (the 1660 I believe) which expects
certain modem control lines to be reversed from every other modem in the
world. Support for that weird modem is planned for the future. Since Ray
Moody just recently posted an announcement and "how-to-get" info, I won't
repeat all that here. Suffice it to say that I can whole-heartedly recommend
Kermit 2.1 for VT100 fans, and you can't beat the price!

Sincerely,
Frank Prindle
