[comp.sys.cbm] Inexpensive, quality interface!

holloway@clio.las.uiuc.edu (05/12/88)

To all C-64 owners:

Don't spend your hard-earned cash on expensive RS-232 interfaces.
Now, you can get a hand-crafted interface for as low as $20.00 plus
shipping. Send orders via E-mail, or to this address:

With this interface, one can use any standard RS-232 modem, as opposed
to cheap Commodore modems. The design has been thoroughly tested and is
frequently used for bulletin boards and other machines on my own C-64.

While I'm here, it's time for pet peeve #1096: So-called "rs232" interfaces
that do not produce +12/-12v signals. Peak Peripherals and Saylor Enterprises
come to mind. Those interfaces will not work with many modems, which require
RS-232 voltage levels instead of TTL voltage levels. Considering that all
that's necessary is a trio of caps, a pair of diodes, and a 1488/1489 pair,
this is pretty ridiculous.... the chips cost 49c apiece, and diodes and small
caps are similiarly cheap.

I suspect that too many of these interfaces are being designed by teen-aged
kids in back bedrooms who have no idea of basic electronic engineering.

So consider this a consumer warning: Do not buy Peak Peripherals or Saylor
Enterprises. Do not buy any interface that does not contain a 1488/1489 pair.
Do not buy any interface that doesn't feed that chip pair with at
least +/-9v. You're only asking for trouble, otherwise.

And I'd like to know technical details about the interface that this kid so
crassly commercialistically posted to the net in violation of all applicable
netiquette. Starry-eyed blurbs saying "The greatest thing since sliced bread!"
don't make it here, buster -- this be a technically sophisticated forum, not a
playground full of Commie Kiddies waiting to be conned.
