[comp.sys.cbm] 64tran fortran compiler for the C64

finkel@TAURUS.BITNET (05/17/88)

Since I couldn't reach rxf@philabs.philips.com. I'm posting this.
I assume it might interest a few more people.

I am posting here the address of trident software, who sell 64tran, the C64
fortran compiler. from my short experience, it isn't a goods compiler if you
look
for advanced fortran options. ( don't even THINK about complex numbers! )
( I'm not a fortran program myself, so I can't rate it exacly).
___However___, the compiler generates TRUE 6510 code, and the resulting code
is almost always SMALL. a barebones program occupies 80 bytes! even C power
null program takes 3 blocks! I am also quite impressed with execution speed,
but I don't have any numbers handy. The compiler has also a set of special C64
commands with support for graphics.
Another drawback of it is that it's buggy. The version we have had a lot of
troubles compiling one of it's demo programs. It always got stuck at one of the
lines. actually, it compiled once out of 20 tries. ( I can't explain why ).
All the other demo programs compile flawlessly.
All the demo programs come with both source and executables.
We had version 2.2, but I'm almost sure that there are newer versions. I think
that it's from 1986, but I don't know if 1986 is the year of the original
release, or of version 2.2 . I hope that a newer release will be less buggy.

If there is someone on the net who reads this and have more experience with
64tran, please write your about your experience with 64tran.

The address is:
