[comp.sys.cbm] IBM reading CBM disks

From article <19681@watmath.waterloo.edu>, by kgdykes@watmath.waterloo.edu (Ken Dykes):
]
] I just came to this newsgroup to ask the question
] "is there a program/driver whatever, or otherwise is it straighforward
] to read cbm disks on a dos machine"
] i see several articles (as far back as we expire) with a subject line
] implying i may find THEE ANSWER.
] but all they talk about is how to buzz disk heads.
] Was there an answer to THEE QUESTION? can DOS machines handle cbm disks?
] A friend wants to discard his cbm business setup (inventory) and go to
] a dos machine -- but he doesnt want to re-enter all the inventory data
] and so it would be nice to be able to "convert" the data.
] (as long as DOS can "read" the disks, we will figure something for any
] mangling the actual applications have done to the data)
] (actually, i havent seen his cbm machine, i HOPE it doesnt use those
] ancient million-inch wide floppies (8 inch?))

The bottom line is that IBM CANNOT READ CBM disks. End of discussion.
To the original poster: if you are interested I can email with the reasons,
but I baulk at cluttering up the net with such a discussion.

For successful conversion use the technique I am using to transfer the King
James Bible from CBM format to CP/M: get a modem or RS232 interface, a
terminal program such as Common Sense (for C64 - is the CBM stuff on a 64
or a PET or what?), and a terminal program on the IBM, and just Xmodem or
Kermit the stuff over. I've been at it now for three evenings, and have got
about 10% of the way through it (The entire Bible is about 5 Megs, so it
is not a small task :-)
