[comp.sys.cbm] Batteries Included 80-column card

jem97@leah.Albany.Edu (Jim Mower) (02/09/89)

Although I will be eternally grateful to the kermit developers for
supporting 80 column output on the C64, my eyes grow weary. I would
like to add a Batteries Included 80-column card but I need to know a few
things: Where is it sold? I have scanned Compute's Gazette and Run
with no luck. Is it compatible with Fast Load? Will my wife say "The
screen doesn't look any different. Why is it so expensive?" Thanks for
any information.

Common complaint. :-) And their 80 column drivers are some of the
nicest I've seen....

Batteries Included, as I recall, was bought by Electronic Arts. The
hardware products that B.I. once created are no longer in production.
This is a great loss.... this machine I am on uses a B.I. BusCard II
and a B.I.-80. Nice combo. You will have to buy used (recommended
price is $30-$50).

Nope. It takes up the Cartridge Port. It also re-arranges the internal
memory map of the 64. You lose 8K of BASIC space and gain some
marginal BASIC 4.0 commands (adequate for serial, but not for real
IEEE drives). This means that it will not work with (a) large generic
BASIC programs, (b) hybrid programs that do not expect 8K to be
"missing," (c) most commercial programs. It WILL work with (a) Kermit
2.1+, (b) earlier PaperClips, (c) your own BASIC programs, (d)
BobsTerm Pro 64 (NOT in 80, BobsTerm ignores the card but WORKS).

It won't look too different 'till activated. Then you get a crisp B&W
text display. Note: You need a MONITOR (preferably not color) to make
best use of the card. The Kermit VT100 emulation works GREAT at 1200
baud with a B.I. card, but the card cannot display all the attributes
possible on the hi-res screen. Still, the emulation is better than
some TERMINALS at school. The hassles of plugging/unplugging are WELL
worth the money if you make any use of Unix systems.

Want more info? E-Mail me. I'll be very happy to ignore you. :-)
