[comp.sys.cbm] Desterm128 and 8 bits, no parity

prindle@NADC.ARPA (Frank Prindle) (04/26/89)

Perhaps I can help those who can't get Desterm128 to work with 8N1 setting.
If you are trying to use this on a host system that actually *is* sending
parity, you must set the "Filter Hi Bit" setting to ON (it is unfortunately
distributed with this setting OFF). It seems that Desterm128 tries to behave
like an IBM graphic printer, namely it has a whole other 128 character set
in effect whenever the high bit of each received byte is a 1, unless the
filter is turned on. So you have to use either 7-bits with appropriate
parity, or 8-bits no-parity filter-on. Most other emulators simply ignore
the high bit by default, so perhaps this is the source of the puzzlement.
Sincerely
Frank Prindle

Frank;

  Yes, your comment about the 8N1 and mask high bit are correct. And you
  expresed it very well -- thanks. Now, if only everyone else would read the
  FFFFFFine manual...(It may not be great reading, but it DOES contain useful
  information...)

  Matt.
