I've never had problems with devices connected but unpowered. From Fred Bowen's message I can see that it's because I've always printed and modemed through interfaces that were always powered or disconnected. Also, whenever I've had multiple disk drives, I always ran them through a homemade switch box that did not connect the reset lines. Don't know if this is recommended, but I ran this way for 3 or 4 years with no problems. My reason for this drive setup was to maintain device numbers on multiple 1541s and to allow switching the drives to whichever computer needed them.
