I've never had problems with devices connected but unpowered. From
Fred Bowen's message I can see that it's because I've always printed
and modemed through interfaces that were always powered or
disconnected. Also, whenever I've had multiple disk drives, I always
ran them through a homemade switch box that did not connect the
reset lines. Don't know if this is recommended, but I ran this way
for 3 or 4 years with no problems.

My reason for this drive setup was to maintain device numbers on
multiple 1541s and to allow switching the drives to whichever
computer needed them. Looks like I also avoided the problems with
unpowered devices. :-)
