[net.wanted] UNIX to TELEX interface?

Sun would like to would like to interface one of our machines to a Telex
service (eg WU, FTC, etc.) and I would like to talk to anyone who has tried
this.

I am interested in solving the problem for a direct-connect (interactive)
telex circuit, not for the various store-and-forward telex offerings about
the place (eg. WU's Easylink service). Unix can do the store-and-forwarding,
so what I am really looking for is the ability to directly control the
dialling, and to be able to read back the status of the call as I
go.

In fact, what I would like to do resembles what UUCP does, in some ways.

However, direct connection implies a leased 80 Volt Telegraph circuit
and operation with asynchronous 5-bit framing at 60 baud. Therefore,
level shifting and character code conversion is required.

Perhaps someone knows of an available teletype-style device that
handles the level conversion, and offers an ASCII RS232 port
option for host attach. Alternatively, has anyone worked out all the
necessary software to do this?
